Campaign Educates U.S. Nurses on Ebola Risks & Protocols

At its worst moment in 2014, the Ebola virus outbreak seemed unstoppable, infecting more than 20,000 people in West Africa, according to the World Health Organization. Of those, almost half died, suffering debilitating side effects including severe hemorrhagic fever.The rapidly escalating global health crisis had also severely strained the health care systems of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, infecting and killing some frontline health workers there too.

By October, a handful of nurses in the United States had also become infected, including those who were providing treatment to the Liberian man who became the first Ebola patient diagnosed within the United States.

Johnson & Johnson engaged immediately in this rapidly escalating global health crisis, working with our partners to provide resources to help frontline health care workers. In November, Johnson & Johnson provided with a grant to sponsor a continuing education campaign on Ebola risks and protocols to help frontline health care workers based in the United States better navigate the challenges of diagnosing, treating and protecting themselves. has been a long-time partner of our Campaign for Nursing’s Future, and the group’s extensive reach ensured the greatest number of nurses would have free access to the latest information about Ebola. Since the partnership launch in November, more than 40,000 nurses have taken the continuing education class, and Johnson & Johnson is currently talking to trusted global health organizations about ways to support and care for the frontline health care workers who are on the ground in the affected countries.
